Grounded (BFA Capstone)
Grounded invites viewers to step away from the digital world and rediscover a shared, sensory connection to nature that restores both intergenerational relationships and a sense of inner balance.
Grounded explores the beauty of nature by bringing generations together. During the rapid pace of technological growth in our society, humans have lost touch with nature and, in turn, with ourselves. Nearly 40% of children ages 8–12 use social media, and with over 6 billion Facebook and Instagram accounts combined, the average screen time now reaches roughly 7 hours per day. When one takes the time to step away from the digital world, “to ground” the body physically connects to the earth’s natural electrical charge, immediately shifting the nervous system from a sympathetic “fight-or-flight” state to a calmer, more connected state.
Utilizing tactile techniques from sculpture, printmaking, and painting, this installation responds to these conditions by offering a shared sensory experience that resonates across generations, inviting older viewers into reflection and younger viewers into discovery. The installation encourages viewers to engage their senses by touching the moss and rocks, listening to the flow of water, and searching for creatures hidden throughout the piece.
Creating this interactive work serves as a testament to nature and the solitude it provides. Viewers are invited to step away from the screen and reconnect with the natural world. tactile techniques from sculpture, printmaking, and painting, this installation responds to these conditions by offering a shared sensory experience that resonates across generations, inviting older viewers into reflection and younger viewers into discovery.
